20セント硬貨 (アメリカ合衆国)

アメリカ合衆国20セント硬貨は、かつて流通したアメリカ合衆国の20セント硬貨である。1875年から1878年まで製造されたが、最後の2年間はコレクター向けのみの製造であった。同時期に流通していた25セント硬貨にデザインとサイズが酷似していたことから、流通地域を大混乱に陥れた。

少額貨幣の不足対策と経済の流動性改善の為、1874年にネバダ州上院議員ジョン・P・ジョーンズによって「20セント硬貨製造の提案」が行われた。この議案は議会を通過し、造幣局ディレクターHenry Lindermanに任せることとなった。

フィラデルフィアの造幣局局長であるジェームズ・ポロックは25セントに似てる事からデザインに反対したが、Lindermanはデザインを気に入っていた事から、「法律上、一定額以上の銀貨裏面にはハクトウワシが必要で、鷲の顔の向きを逆向きにして、側面も平坦にすれば問題ない。大丈夫だ。」と強行した。

結果、流通地域は大混乱に陥った。1878年5月2日、議会は流通していた20セント硬貨を廃止し、溶融することとした。
